Wrestling in high school and college (coaching grade schoolers in wrestling while still in high school), then was recruited to the now defunct Philadelphia Sambo Club where he got his first taste of submission grappling and gi throws. From there he dabbled in Judo for a few years before finding Brazilian Jiu Jitsu at Maxercise Academy, earning his Blue Belt under Steve Maxwell and eventually earning his Black Belt from Coach John Desimone.

  • James Austin

Meet James, one of our dedicated kids program coaches. His martial arts journey began at the tender age of 4, sparked by a bullying incident at school. What started as an effort by his parents to boost his confidence and promote healthy activity quickly transformed into a lifelong passion for James.

By the time he reached adulthood, he had notched two trips to the Tang Soo Do World Championships and earned black belts in two separate martial arts disciplines. These achievements provided him with a rock-solid foundation in the art of training and teaching martial arts to children, emphasizing the value of nurturing lifelong martial artists.

In 2021, after a several-year hiatus, James embarked on a new journey in the world of Jiujitsu with Fundamental Jiujitsu, and it was a decision he's never regretted.
